Here are a few tips to consider when shopping for accessories:

• Bring along a list of accurate measurements. Don’t forget accurate measurements of furniture pieces or wall spaces you want to accessorize. Correct measurements aide in determining size, form and function of art or objects being placed.
• Bring samples when possible. When shopping for that perfect piece of art to go in your bedroom, living or dining room, bring along a sample of your fabric used in your upholstery; arm cushion, seat cushion, bed pillow, etc., or a color chip if you are painting and want to make sure the fabric or leather or wood finish on our accent furniture is ‘just perfect”. These will help in matching color and textures.

Here are a few of this designer’s personal tips:

• Overhead lighting is oh-so-not flattering, accent lamps work wonders for me! Accent lamps create ambience, romance and add much more mood to any room. Use lamps on dressers, chests and work into entertainment walls. They are also fun to use on and in armoires and on kitchen and bathroom counters. Just make sure it’s the right accent lamp. Smaller buffet lamps used in pairs are really popular now; not only on buffets, but on smaller end tables, nightstands, in pairs on dressers, and the shades now are fabulous: lots of whimsy, tapestry, silks, bullion fringe and the prices are amazing! You will not believe the fabulous lamp buys we have now.
• Let’s talk end tables, cocktail tables and nightstands. End tables usually need lamps about 26” to 30” tall, and depending on the style of table, the lamp can stand on its own or put a couple of other decorative objects such as a picture frame, a box, etc. around it. A little trick if your lamp is a bit too short: laid some books on their side and builds the height of your lamp that way. For cocktail tables, Change out the accessories often…not only will that be fun for you to look at something different, but you can showcase more of your cool stuff that way. A decorative box to store your remote control so you’re not searching high and low for it is pretty practical. Cocktail table books reflect your interests and are a relaxing source of entertainment. A stylized vase with a fresh floral arrangement or natural cut greenery brings in the outdoors and creates texture. Don’t forget the sofa table! Behind the sofa? Not anymore. More & more we are using them as a console in a hallway with a beautiful, decorative mirror (Oh my! Do we have some great looking mirrors), in entry ways, even as a sideboard in a eating area. Of course they still do go behind the sofa to add depth from the wall or as a divider for a large room.

A great look for nightstands is to hang framed mirrors over your nightstands, behind your lamps. This adds a lot of depth, uses the blank wall space behind your lamps, and enlarges the room with the reflective quality of the mirror. You want to hang your mirror so that your lamp shade is in the top half or third of the mirror. The book you can’t put down, the lovely glass carafe, maybe a tiny vase for one rose, and of course “the photo” all makes for the clutter that is our life on each of our nightstands.
